Caribou Season is Open
After a three-year closure following a 2022 Supreme Court ruling, limited entry caribou hunting has reopened in BC’s northeast under the new 2026–2028 regulations synopsis. The Fort Nelson region, which includes portions of our guide area, is part of that reopening. Northern Mountain herd surveys showed stable and growing populations. We’re glad to see it.
What a Caribou Hunt Looks Like Here
The Muskwa-Kechika has always been exceptional caribou country. September is when the bulls are moving, coming down from the high country ahead of the rut with full velvet-stripped antlers and white manes. Most of our caribou hunts run on horseback, covering ground until we find the right bull. These are big animals in open terrain. As always, glassing is part of the hunt, and when you find a mature bull out here, you know it.
Caribou combines well with Canadian Moose, Mountain Goat, and Rocky Mountain Elk; the seasons align and the territory overlaps.
